I was working on a story today about traditional foods for Ramadan. The family I interviewed had a neat recipe for this dessert called sawine. Having never heard of it before, I was intrigued and did a little research on the interwebs to see what I could find out about it. Turns out its has Pakistani roots, ties to the West Indies and is related to kheer, which is an Indian dish that is reminiscent of rice pudding. Digging a little deeper, I found a blog post by The Inner Gourmet, a Guyanese-American food blogger, who makes a sawine cake with rice vermicelli and, to my delight, it’s gluten-free! I plan to make the recipe but maybe you can beat me to it? Tell me what you think!
